Capricorn Season Mixtape 2021

To paraphrase Notable Capricorn Patti Smith, Jesus died for somebody’s sins, but not Capricorn’s.

Our little sea goats have a reputation as the stick-in-the-mud rule followers of the Zodiac—but they’ve also got an embarrassment of riches when it comes to amazing, creative, talented musicians to compile into a playlist. Don’t forget: sea goats are mythical beings. Everyone always focuses on the stubborn, determined goat part and not the mystical magical mermaid tail.

And this playlist slaps, if I do say so myself. Granted, I’ve got a LOT of first house Capricorn influence in my chart and a deep, abiding love of Capricorn King David Bowie, so I might be a teensy bit biased.

Resourceful, ambitious, fond of a status symbol, Capricorns are very much the adults of the Zodiac. Because here’s the thing: Capricorn placements and the ages of roughly 0-27 do not really go together. They are painful. They are awkward. Capricorns are the opposite of early bloomers. But once they get their shit together, and the world catches up to them and their standards, watch out.

(Okay, if we’re being honest, the world will likely never catch up to a Capricorn’s standards. It’s something for us all to strive for, really.)

See below for liner notes and which musicians are Capricorns. It’s most of them, on this one.

Liner notes:

* indicates a Capricorn musician

“Gloria: In Excelsis Deo” by Patti Smith*

“Suffragette City” by David Bowie*: I love him. We know this. He’s on here twice, but I really did consider making this playlist entirely David Bowie songs and “9 to 5” by Dolly Parton. Wham, bam, thank you ma’am!

“Pelican” by The Maccabees

“9 to 5” by Dolly Parton* - live

“Pretty Bitch Freestyle” by Saweetie

“Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana*: Kurt Cobain might be the ultimate Pisces, but Dave Grohl is a Capricorn and therefore I am including this song.

“Rich Girl” by Nina Simone*

“It’s the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)” by R.E.M.*: Michael Stipe is a Capricorn and this is a Very Capricorn Sentiment.

“You Can Call Me Al” by Paul Simon: This song is apparently about a mid-life crisis, and Capricorn is ruled by Saturn. When do mid-life crises tend to happen? Around the time of your second Saturn return.

“Electric Love” by Børns*

“Immigrant Song” by Led Zeppelin*: Both Jimmy Page AND John Paul Jones are Capricorns. Also, I recently rewatched Thor: Ragnarok which uses this song absolutely perfectly.

“She Works Hard for the Money” by Donna Summer*

“Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)” by Eurythmics / Annie Lennox*

“Highway to Hell” by AC/DC*: Songwriter Malcolm Young is a Cap.

“north american scum - live at madison square garden” by LCD Soundsystem: Felt appropriate, and while “Losing My Edge” might be the more fitting choice it also seemed like a bit of a dig.

“The Pretender” by Foo Fighters*: See above re: Dave Grohl.

“Smooth Operator” by Sade*

“A Certain Romance” by Arctic Monkeys*: Lead signer Alex Turner is the Cap you’re looking for.

“Changes” by David Bowie*

“Hand of God - Outro” by Jon Bellion*: Originally the end of this playlist, thanks to its sweeping orchestral arrangements and literally having “outro” in the title. Takes me back to crying in SoulCycle, back when that was a thing I did, so it’s fitting for the secret sensitive side all Capricorns harbor, too.

“Stairway to Heaven - Live” by Dolly Parton*: A Capricorn queen covering a song by a band with two Capricorns? I had to. Think of this as a bonus track.
