The Sounds of Virgo Season
If Leo season is a weekend trip to Vegas, Virgo season is the wellness retreat you take to recover. Arriving at the end of summer and heralding the harvest , Virgo provides a respite, a chance for us to get our shit together.
Because if there’s one thing Virgos are associated with, it’s having their shit together. Consider Virgo Class President Beyoncé, who has a literal “Virgo Season Yearbook” on her website right now. Everything is curated and controlled to the nth degree. Other people (ahem, fire signs) might find this boring. To a Virgo, it is deeply fulfilling. It can be the purest form of Virgo expression—when they feel in control of their lives, they’re able to show up fully and be in service to others. Virgos are all about service. They just love to be there for you, usually in incredibly practical ways.
That control can also be a way to avoid confronting the deeper emotions that Virgos will never actually admit to feeling. But as someone whose chart is almost entirely air and earth, who am I to throw stones from my own emotionless glass house here?
Like Gemini, Virgo is ruled by Mercury—but because they’re an Earth sign, they’re a bit like a Gemini who has settled down. Everything Virgo does is in pursuit of mastery, and with Mercury steering the ship there’s always a thoughtful, analytical bent to it.
Turns out there’s an absolute embarrassment of riches when it comes to Virgo musicians, but I think Elvis Costello and The Attractions’ “Beyond Belief” might be a perfect thesis statement for the sign. A departure from the band’s signature style, the lyrics are deliberately obscure, fleeting poetic images against a driving bass line. As Costello told Rolling Stone, “I was consciously writing words that didn’t make sense.”
Thoughtfully, consciously considering just how to make something appear blurry and nonsensical? How very Virgo of him.
