Sense of Space: Astrology, Aesthetics and Interior Design
The aesthetics of astrology can go so much deeper than “the best home decor for your zodiac sign.” (Though honestly, I click on those articles every. single. time.) Redfin recently asked me and sixteen other astrologers how to incorporate astrological influences in home decor. There’s a lot of juicy info in the post, but my Libra-heavy chart and chatty Gemini Mars had a hard time editing down my tips. So here’s the expanded edition, if you will, diving deeper into why Venus and The Fourth House are great places to look for interior inspiration.
Venus
Venus is the planet of love and beauty. It illuminates what we value as well as our aesthetic sensibilities and personal taste. Our relationship to finances, luxury and pleasure, too. “Material Girl” by Madonna? Big Venus energy.
Your Venus sign can give you a clue as to what you’re drawn to when it comes to decor. For example, Venus rules both Taurus and Libra, and it’s super comfortable there. Venus in Taurus natives will likely be drawn to lush, luxurious, sensual objects, while Venus in Libra appreciates the finer things and a balanced aesthetic. (Taurus like the finer things too, but Libra is more…heady about it? Earth sign vs air sign appreciation.) When Venus runs up against a more stoic sign, like Capricorn, that translates into decor, too—perhaps more minimalistic touches are in order here, less overtly opulent but no less discerning. Venus in Sagittarius? Think adventurous, worldly influences. Lots of “I picked this up on my globetrotting travels” kind of things.
The Fourth House
The zodiac wheel is divided into twelve sections, or Houses. Every House is ruled by a corresponding sign, too, which can be helpful in remembering what it’s associated with. (Yeah, there’s a lot of “ruling this” and “ruling that” in astrology.)
Venus rules the Second House of money and possessions (Taurus), so you might think that’d be a good place to go when looking for astrological aesthetic guidance. And you wouldn’t be wrong! But when it comes to interior decor specifically, there’s an equally strong place to consider: The Fourth House, ruled by Cancer and concerned with, well, house and home. Among other things, but for purposes of this post, we’re focusing on the house and home aspect.
Pull up your chart (you can create one for free on astro.com, my go-to source) and take a look at any placements or planets in your Fourth House. If you don’t see any planets there, don’t panic: there’s no such thing as an “empty” house. Because of the way the zodiac is divided, there will still be a sign associated with each of your houses. I don’t have any planets in my Fourth House, but it’s still in Taurus (using the Placidus system), which very much tracks for me.
Take a look at my chart below to see what I mean. The Houses are indicated by the little numbers “inside” the wheel, and you can see how the Fourth House lines up with the glyph for Taurus in my chart.
Your Fourth House can clue you into what you value in your home. (If you know enough about astrology to have a preferred House system, know that it may shift depending on which one you use.) Someone with Gemini in their Fourth House might be a voracious reader who simply must have an impressive home library. Fourth House Pisces? Probably all about that alone time, to the point of carving out a dedicated meditation room and/or spirituality zone.
So: pull up your chart, take a peek at your Venus and your Fourth House, and start to research the qualities of those signs and placements. It can be a very helpful guiding light for your design and decor decisions.
